What exactly is a coffee table?

Aha, you might be thinking now. So there is a difference between a coffee table and a side table. While you probably thought – like most of us, by the way – that they were one and the same. In fact, the term coffee table originally referred to a long, deep table whose function was to look good in front of the couch or armchairs and drinks (hence the name), but also magazines, newspapers, books or decorative objects and to host food at parties.

Today, the transition between a coffee table and a smaller, round side table, for example, is fluid. In other words: Only in the mix do these tables unfold their true purpose and function. Because we can never have enough storage space for our reading, tea, coffee, (Christmas) cookies, candles, table lamps (and whatever we need in the immediate vicinity) anyway, it is very important to spread out comfortably, especially in winter.

Bring order to the table arrangement

And what is the best way to arrange it now? Both different tables one below the other and the orderly chaos on top? We think: a lot helps a lot. So like a larger, low table in front of the couch and smaller side tables next to it or between the couch and armchair. Just imagine your side tables framing the seating arrangement. The smaller side tables on the sides play a smaller role in terms of storage options, as they should initially have table lamps and maybe your favorite book. Then you can let off steam on the large table: picture books, preferably stacked on top of each other, a beautiful vase with winter branches on it, a tray with your favorite candles next to it, decorative objects that you just can’t get enough of… Vary and play with different shapes, heights, materials and colors until you have achieved your personal feel-good arrangement. And if you don’t like it anymore, just restyle it. Sometimes it can be that simple.
