Guide to purchasing console table

The console table is the type of furnishing that is both functional and decorative at the same time. It is one of the most common tables in use today with many different styles, shapes and sizes. But they all have a few things in common. Most importantly, the console table is generally rectangular and needs the wall’s support because of its lack of good width.

Console tables are designed to hold items while being placed against the wall and they are usually found in a place that is outside of floor traffic, but with easy access inside a room. They do not provide a great deal of table space to save room. But they are considered essential for most homes as they hold valuable items and can really accent the overall furnishings.

Finding the right console table for your needs starts by looking over your home for a place where a console table makes sense. Ideally, it needs to be in a space that otherwise is not practical for much in the way of use. Such as between entranceways to other rooms. Yet, the width does not extend out much into the room so that it does not interfere with floor traffic.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A CONSOLE TABLE

The word “narrow” is going to be the most descriptive term for a console table. But it can be rectangular, square, or even round in shape. There are even designs that have mirrors installed on the table as well. However, the need for wall support is fairly common for most versions of the console table. Particularly those with only one or two legs and screws that are used to anchor the back of the table to the wall itself.

You might even consider that a console table is really just a normal table that is cut lengthwise down the middle. However, being narrow is a popular characteristic. They are not always next to walls as being behind sofas is another popular choice. A console table is generally made from wood and can offer very clean, modern lines or feature ornate designs as well. There are certainly many types of finishes used on these tables with a great variety of designs as well. Whether made from wood, glass, metal or synthetic varieties. You can find one that fits your needs and home décor choices as well.

Storage: One of the primary considerations of your console table is the type of storage it provides for small items. Before you make the purchase, you’ll need to decide just what the storage use is for the table first. All too often, people purchase a table without thinking about what it will store for the long run and instead just get one for looks. Well, while it certainly looks good, its best use is when it is storing or displaying items that you like.

Also, consider that many console tables have drawers as well so you can keep essential items there as well. If you have a home phone that you want to have on the table, then having a phone book inside the drawer is a practical consideration. In addition to holding a phone, you could also place pictures, a lamp, and other knick-knacks on the table as decorative items.

COMPLIMENTING YOUR HOME DECOR

Now that you know the general shape and size along with its purpose. You can set out to get the right type of table. Going online and browsing through retail stores is the general option. But now that you know the parameters of what you want it will come down to budget and any special features that you might not have thought of for your table.

Look over your home décor in the area where the table will go and ask yourself what works;

  • Will it be made from wood, metal, glass, or synthetic materials?
  • Will it match the general style of the furnishings?
  • Will it be the same general color as the other furnishings?
  • Will the overall style be modern, ornate or something else?

The better the console table fits the room, the better your room will look. Basically, furniture like this needs to accent and not dominate when it comes to room décor. In addition, the overall height of the table will be a consideration as well. You may want one that is roughly as high as your window sills in order to complement the look they provide or perhaps the back of the sofa if that is where it is going.
